An average for people of that age, sex, and country, from WHO life tables. It is not a prediction for any one person, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

How it works

The years ahead,
counted in visits

Years ahead, at their age

The World Health Organization's life tables give the further years someone of their age, sex, and country can expect. That is not life expectancy at birth: someone who has reached 80 can still expect years ahead.

Times how often you see them

Years ahead multiplied by your visits in a year. The open dots show what one more visit a year would add, which is the only number here you control.

An average, not a prediction

The tables are from 2019, the last year before pandemic death rates, and past 85 they are tapered with the single-year United States table. If you know your family better, type your own expected age.

Questions

A few things
worth asking

Is what I enter saved anywhere?

No. The sums run in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to optml or anyone else.

Why does it ask for their sex and country?

Because the years ahead differ by both. In the WHO's 2019 tables a 70-year-old woman could expect about 16 more years in the United States and about 20 in Japan; for a man of 70 the figures were about 15 and 16.

Can I use it for grandparents, or for calls instead of visits?

Yes. It works for anyone aged 30 or over: add a person and change the name. For calls, set a typical visit to "A few hours, or a call".
